I just added a New Western Digital WD400BBRTL (40G) hard
drive as a slave. I can't get XP to recognize it. I
checked with Western home site and tried all the
recommended jumper settings. No luck. They also
recommended checking Device Manager for second IDE
channel settings of "Auto Detect" on Device 1. XP has
this option grayed out so I can't chage it. Any
suggestions??

Greetings --

Do you have the drive jumpered correctly for the way you've
connected it? Does the PC's BIOS recognize the drive correctly?

Once you've ensured that the hardware is configured properly, the
hard drive cannot appear in Windows Explorer or My Computer until it
has been partitioned and formatted. Right-click My Computer > Manage
> Disk Management. Create and format partition(s) on the second hard
drive as desired.
