activate I get a blue screen with two boxes in @ uppermost
corners. Nada.....no 800 phone # , same blue screen when I
try to from programs, acces. etc. Nothing happens. It's

So you were really all too busy in the last 28 days to activate?
Considering that it takes a long time to install AND get all your
applications installed, a minute to activate doesn't seem like a hell of
a lot of time.

You could try calling them. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;prodoffer33a&sd=GN
for their contact info. You get 2 free incidents for Windows XP.
Hopefully getting their activation to work (and also getting them to fix
the BSOD so it doesn't occur ever) might not even cost you an incident,
but it could.

You could try booting from the install CD and using the Repair function
to see if it fixes the problem so msoobe.exe runs with causing the BSOD,
and then activate using the Internet connect method.

Have you ran a full scan using a recently updated anti-virus product?
How about running Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder, and HijackThis to check
if you have malware or spyware installed?

YOU use the shell everytime you use Windows. It's called the desktop.
It is the user interface provided. Under DOS, it was command.com as the
command-line interpreter. Under Windows, it is explorer.exe handling
the GUI desktop (although you can use a different shell since a registry
key lets you select what program to use).

Try this:

Use Start- Run and enter the following text in the dialog box:
regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

Then do it again with the following text:
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

Then launch activation manually:
%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Thanks Ron,
I was literally saved by the bell with one day left for
activating! Somehow through three customer service
people, and finally........... a foreign teckie walked me
thru a repair installation after failing in safe
mode..... with some of the commands you mentioned, but
his list was longer and didn't
work................HMMMMMMMMM!!! Now that I'm here I
see that my old user account(me,administrator, password
protected) is still available , as well as my old
settings, bookmarks, etc.Should I delete the "new" me
administrator as a user? I don't want to think something
will goof up again now that I'm activated!!! I have my
antivirus, Avast, installed again , as the MSMan made me
delete it-the shareware one I use. I don't know if I
should uninstall Win98? Let me know.........I'm so used
to my 98 still. Thanks

Because anonymous, obviously a Windows-only user that knows a few
tidbits about Unix, and about their own operating system, figured a
"shell" was something that only Unix has. Didn't you bother reading the
posts in the thread before adding your "elucidation"? You couldn't even
bother to read the copy of their post in my reply?

If the activation issue is resolved then I would leave things as they
are, at least until you are a bit more comfortable with working with
Windows XP.

If you are going to make changes, such as deleting a user or
uninstalling your old Windows 98, then you probably want to have a
full system backup, preferably a disk image, before doing so.

Good luck
