View Full Version : Deletion of old e-mail

Anyone,
On my old pc and operating system(windows 95 &97) I kept my e-mail messages
for as long as 2 years. I only cleaned up those that I did not want.
I recently got a new pc with windowsxp. I continued to keep e-mail in my
inbox. One day all of my e-mails were wiped off my machine. Is this a new
feature of windowsxp or is there some setting for e-mails that I am not
aware of? ..and how can I prevent this from happening again?
Any help would be appreciated.

Mark,
I don't know what happened to your email. You didn't mention what email
program you're using. If Outlook, check to see if AutoArchive backed up the
older emails somewhere. Also, there was one version of McAfee antivirus that
was wiping out emails. They have corrected the problem. If this sounds like
a likely scenario, check with their technical support.
If you were using Outlook Express and your DBX files corrupted, you can use
a tool called DBExtract to extract and save messages fromthe damaged files.

Sharon,
Thanks for the info. Yes I am using Outlook Express...and have used on my
previous machine and with Windows 95&98.
How do I get to review my Autoarchive settings...
Oh I use Norton Anti-virus
Thanx for your help...

AutoArchive is an Outlook feature, not Outlook Express so you can ignore
this. (The programs have similar names but different features.)
Since this is OE, I suggest heading over to the OE website I mentioned and
downloading a copy of DBXtract. It's free. Find your DBX files. If you click
on Tools> Options> Maintenance in the OE menu, you'll get a screen that
tells you exactly what folder those files are stored in. Use Windows
Explorer to get to that folder. You may have to change Folder Options> View
for the folder and files to be visible.
Copy the appropriate files and paste them to a folder. INBOX.DBX is the main
mailbox. If you had mail organized into subfolders, look for those too.
Then use DBXtract on them. Follow the directions that come with the program.
You will get one *.EML file for every message stored. What you do next with
the EML files is up to you. For example, you can use them as they are:
double click one to have it open in a message window --or-- drag and drop
into any personal folder displayed within the OE program window.
