View Full Version : download/save as type...

I recently got two replies to a question about download problems. Of
course, I didn't get to try the fix til a few days later. I replied to
the old post, but no one has seen it, so I have to repost cuz my problem
has not gone away.
When I try to download a program from the internet, in the bottom of the
save as window, it says, SAVE AS type .pcx I can choose all other
files, but it doesn't matter. ALL EXE FILES ARE SAVED AS PCX FILES!!!
The suggestion I received was to find any download manager type
programs, and get rid of them. Well, I found two. Adobe Download
Manager and a DOWNLOADWARE program. I deleted both of them, rebooted,
and tried again, and guess what? Problem still persists. It is most
annoying cuz I can't get any exe program downloaded. I am afraid I'll
have to reformat to get rid of problem. ANY MORE IDEAS???
I feel like tossing this thing out the window, but I hate broken glass
in house.
Patti (and thanks to Jim and Zigzag for answering before, but I need
more help!!!)

Patty,
Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
In the right pane should be two values, Default and Content Type.
Default should read: exefile
Content Type should read: application/x-msdownload
If these values don't match, double click the appropriate entry and change
it.
If editing the Registry manually isn't to your liking, see www.dougknox.com,
Win XP Fixes, File Association Fixes, EXE File Association Fix for a small
REG file that will restore the default associations for EXE files.

PCX are of course 'microsoft picture files'. Try to download an .exe file
and make note of the file doing the downloading. Then, replace that file.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!
It was in netscape, a *helper application* HELPER MY @@@@@
application/octet stream or something like that...save as pcx.
Everything is back to normal.
Thanks!
