View Full Version : HELP!! pci.sys corrupted and XP will not load (don't have a recovery disk)

I have tried every recovery disk I have from Win98SE,
WinME ... but, for some stupid reason I failed to create a
startup disk win I loaded WinXP.

I was upgrading the motherboard drivers and when it
restarted, I am now getting a pci.sys error and it tells
me to put in my original system disk and press 'r' to
repair.

My problem is that it does not boot from my CD original
and I just keep getting the error. I tried booting from
the Win98SE and WinMe startup disks but I can not get my
WinXP to be run (it says it will not run from DOS).

I did go to my laptop which still runs Win98SE due to
limited hard drive space, and I copied the pci.sy_ file as
pci.sys from the original WinXP to a floppy, then copied
it to my desktop c:\windows\system32\drivers after
renaming the existing pci.sys to pcisys.old. This did not
work either.

Is there any way to get it to boot as WinXP and do a
repair???????

I am so desperate ...

Check in the BIOS that you have it set to boot from the CD before the Hard
Drive. Then do a repair install of XP.
If you replaced the Motherboard without preparing your hard drive before
hand, then this is your only option. Aside from a fresh install, which of
course would loose all your data.

Yes, I do have it set to go to my CD, then HHD-0 ... but
it seems the CD it not bootable. When I was building it,
I had to install Win98SE then install WinXP.

I did rebuilt the entire harddrive when I installed the
new motherboard, I was just upgrading my motherboard
drivers since I was having problems with my NIC.

If I get someone to send me a pci.sys (from
Windows\system32\pci.sys from their system, would it
work? I can put it on a floppy with Startup for Win98SE
and copy it over to my desktop hard drive. I tried just
using the pci.sy_ and renaming it from the original CD,
but it did not work.

Can you start in safe mode? Have you tried "last known good"?

If you can't boot from CD, you can download the setup floppies from
Microsoft.
