If you remove the original 512MB module and just leave
the new one in, does it sometimes report 256 and other
times 512? If so, it's very likely that either the RAM
is not correctly installed, or it is partially bad.
If it shows 512 all the time with only the new module
installed, the two modules you have may not be compatible
together in that motherboard - we'd need more information
about each module and your motherboard to help further.
