Ok, Im not really familiar with this technical stuff, but
I'm trying. My question is this. A friend has a brand new
PC hit by the worm, it is so messed up we cant do anything
and she did not receive an XP disc with the computer when
she purchased it. There are files corrupted or missing and
XP will not even start.I was wondering if it is possible
to take the hard drive from my PC running Windows 98 and
install it in her PC temoporarily to transfer the
operating system to her hard drive. Can anyone help?

I wouldn't recommend moving your drive to her machine, as you'll probably
end up mucking up your drive. And it's doubtful you'd do her system any
good, either. Best bet would be for your friend to reinstall Windows from
whatever recovery source she has; most likely if she didn't get CDs, it's on
a partition on the hard drive. You'd need to look into the information that
came with the computer to see how to access that recovery partition.

Since you have Windows 98 and your friend was running Windows XP, just how
do you think you'll accomplish anything by moving your HDD into her system?
Win98 and WinXP are two totally, completely separate operating systems.
Her computer will still have the capability to restore it to factory
condition...even though she did not receive a WinXP Disc.
She needs to review the documentation that came with the computer, or visit
the manufacturers website to find instructions on how to do a reinstallation
of the OS to factory state.
