When using the 'search' function on windows XP, when I
type in the first few letters of the item I am searching
for- a list of previously searched for files with the
same letters pops up below the text. I don't want this to
happen .Where are these 'auto fill-in' 'previous
searches' stored? And how do I turn off this function?

If you right click on the internet explorer icon in your startmenu or open
internet explorer and go tools > internet options, you will find on the
content tab, a button labeled autocomplete. Click it and disable the feature
from the window that appears.

Windows xp is interlocked with internet explorer so that many features are
carried right throughout the operating system. Autocomplete, help and
support's new interface, web style views in examples such as explorer with
the side bar / quick function. Also the search assistant / start > search
is now a web applet powered by Internet Explorer and resembles the internet
explorer built in search capabilities.
