View Full Version : partitioning hard disks

I have just purchased a new computer with a 120 GB hard
drive.
I would like to partition the drive and have a copy of
Partition Commander 6. (If ^ won't do it I can upgrade to
version 8)
Will there be a performance hit if I partition the drive
using this utility. I propose the following partitions:
32,8, 32, 32, 16 Gb.
The alternative is to reformat the disk with FDisk and
reinstall Windows XP (Home Edition), but I only have a
recovery disk, so I don't know if I can do that, as I am a
newbie with XP.
Many thanks
Curt

I've no experience with Partition Commander. I used Partition Magic to
divide 30 and 40 gig hd's on my system with no performance degradation that
I'm aware of. Since both programs do the same thing, I would guess you'll
the same result using Partition Commander to make your partitions any size
you want.

From what I've read in the groups, a system recovery disk will not allow you
to partition....only restore your system back to factory specifications even
if you were to fdisk and re-install XP.

Hi, Roger.
Unless something in your OEM version of WinXP stops you, the procedure is
much simpler than that - and you don't need any third-party software. You
don't even need FDISK or any other DOS/Win9x/ME programs. Unless you plan
to install Win9x/ME on your new computer, you don't ever need those - or
FAT - again. ;<)
If you were using a retail WinXP, either upgrade or full, Home or
Professional, you could just boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and tell it to
partition and format your drive. You would create the System Partition and,
if different, WinXP's boot volume during Setup. Then, after WinXP is
installed and running, you would use WinXP's built-in Disk Management to
create any other partitions you want, assign drive letters, and format them.
How much of this you can do with your version of WinXP depends on just what
your OEM put onto - or took off - that CD-ROM.

Just warning you that the final partition will be 7-8GB, not 16 due to the
differences in the definition of a GB (1,000,000,000 bytes or
1,073,741,824).
