Some smut file got saved to my desktop while I was surfing
the net, and it won't let me delete it.
When I try, it says:
"Access is denied. Make sure disk is not full or write
protected and that the file is not currently in use."
Near as I can tell, the file is not in use, protected, and
my disk is not full.
How do I get rid of this file (.exe file)?

Go to Start/Run and type in "msconfig" without quotes and hit enter. Go =
to the Startup tab. See if you can identify anything there that might =
be it and uncheck it. (Filez.exe is a common one.) If not, on the =
opening page of msconfig, take the checkmark out next to Startup items =
and reboot. You should be able to delete it then.

How do I delete an "undeletable" file?
Thanks to MS-MVP Kelly Theriot for this tip.
Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End
Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command
Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable
file) is located in. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where
<filename> is the file you wish to delete. Go back to Task Manager, click
File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task
Manager.

Try the tool FreeFile.exe. It lets you find out which process is
locking a specified file and allow you to free the file by terminating
the locking process.
(The .Net Framework is required to run the file).
Download the program at:

Hope this helps,
