computer wont turn off

Help when i have turned my computer on and then want to
shut down i click on start menu click on turn off computer
then another box comes up that states hibernate, turn off
or restart when i click on turn off the computer does not
turn off it just stays at my desktop the screen does not
change at all could some one please post me the solution.
