View Full Version : Serious Explorer problem

I got 2 files, AVIs that I cannot delete. I have seen this
problem around for some time but I have never found a
solution for this.
Whenever I access the file, explorer goes crazy, using up
100% CPU time and memory increasing rapidly. Killing it
and restarting another explorer won't even do, the newly
started explorer will too, use up all of the system's
ressources in an instant.
Just even putting the focus on the file in explorer is
sufficient to start this chain reaction.
I would really, really like to delete those files because
one of them is on my desktop, whenever I tab around on my
desktop, this will happen.
I'd appreciate help on resolving this if anyone got an
idea how to fix this. Um.. Yea, I'm kinda desperate to get
this fixed ;-)

Hi Marc,
First, see if these two files are listed on the playlist in the media =
player. If so, delete them from the playlist, then go back and try and =
delete them.
If that doesn't help, try this fix:

I found the following posted on a newsgroup some months ago but can't
remember where exactly. The fix involves changing a registry entry so only
do this after you have created a system restore point and backed up anything
not already backed up etc...
Colin
The fix for Windows XP not letting you delete .avi
I've seen this coming up more and more all over the place so I figured I'd
stick it here.
Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much
better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug
in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files
before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.
To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry
key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}
InProcServer32
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file
property queries on these files.
Just an extra note, if you do a "search" for this key it will not be found,
look for it manually it is very easy to find. As always newbie or not, if
you FUBAR your registry its your own fault. This fix does work, I use it and
have applied it to many XP machines. Now go ahead and fix this royal pain in
the ass!
