I have a Sony Vaio RX-752 2 Ghz, with a Lucent softmodem
running Windows XP Home Ed. with 512 K of memory.
Yesterday, August 19, I dlo'd three OS patches from
Windows Update. They were fresh updates; There were 4
available, one which required solo install, and which I
had planned to do subsequently. I keep my OS very current.
From the subsequent reboot, my modem will not connect
above 21.6 kb/s. Some attempts were as slow as 12 kb/s.
All connects are slow, suggesting some negotiation
difficulties. Consequently, due to the slow bit rate on
connect, I cannot get back on the Windows Upgrade site for
any help. Lucent has sold the modem business to another
company which does not support these soft modems. Sony
website has no help, and no updated modem drivers. I have
tried reinstalling the modem driver, and creating a new
connection profile. Windows reports the modem is working
correctly, and all parameters are correct to the factory
default. I poked through the Widows troubleshooting with
no problems apparent. I suspect some new network profile
has been installed with one of the upgrades. Nothing else
is NOT working on this PC. All network functions work
correctly to the two other PCs I have on my home LAN. My
other PCs run W98 2nd Ed., and that is how I have been
able to post this plea for help. Anyone have any
suggestions?
