View Full Version : Change a User name?

Peter
May 22nd 04, 09:26 PM
My computer has a name, but I, as the principal user, am shown as "User" in
profiles. Can I alter that. If I delete that profile and create another
one will it screw up files?
Thanks in advance (WinXP Home SP1)

Create a new user with the proper name. Log on as the new user, then
log off all users. Log on as the Administrator and in the Control
Panel > System > Advanced > User profiles > Settings copy the old user
profile onto the new user.

Hi Peter,

You can change the registered owner and organisation by modifying the registry. Click on Start >>
Run and type REGEDIT. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Double click on the RegisteredOwner key and change its value to your desired name. You may also
enter your organisation name by double clicking the RegisteredOrganization key.

The folder tree under Documents and Settings cannot be renamed. You may create a new account with
the desired name and then log-in to a third account (you may log in to the Administrator account)
and copy the existing account to the new account. You can copy an account by right clicking on My
Computer and selecting properties. Flip to the advanced tab and click on settings under 'User
Profiles'.

Unfortunately it's the main Adminstrator account (me) I want to copy to the
new user name (also me) and it doesn't allow that to happen. I'll live with
it! My name appears everywhere else so I really am making a mountain out of
a molehill.

Hi Peter,

If you want to copy the admin account to the new one that you have created, you will have to create
another acount. Thereafter, login to the third account and copy over the admin acount to the second
account.

Well as you realize, it does not really matter as long it is not hurting the performance of your
machine, so you may as well leave it like it is right now.
