Take the Windows XP CD, put it in the drive. First, try
to boot the computer, it should either start loading
windows or ask if you would like to boot from the cd,
then press a key to start the boot.

If this does work ignore this part, if not keep reading.
You will need to go into bios (when you start your
computer its usually by pressing the del, or F2 button).
Then somewhere there will be in bios to change the boot
devices. Change the first device to CD-ROM (or IDE) then
save your setting and restart.

Then you just go through the setup answering all their
questions. If you have your key (which should be on a
sticker on the outside of your computer case somewhere)
then type it in and it should keep loading. If you have
lost it then contact microsft at this number and they
will help you 1-800-R-U-Legit.

I'm in the same boat.

I put the new hard drive in, boot up on Windows ME startup disk, with CR Rom
support.

I then type setup.exe from the CDRom, and I get the message "Can not run in
DOS mode.

Any idea how I re-install XP?

Regards,

Si.
