Want to uninstall windows messenger. I Have windows xp
pro. When I go to windows components, there is no listing
for this, so I can not get rid of it. Even when I sign
out Messenger I still get the pop ups.
Thanks,
Linda

You are talking about the "Messenger Service" in Windows XP for the
Pop-up's. This is NOT Windows Messenger.
You can just enable XP's built in firewall to stop the pop'ups. -

Greetings --
Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"
This particular "sales method" is strikingly similar to the
"protection" rackets offered to small businesses by organized
criminals. Yes, it's a scam; no reputable business would need to
resort to extortion. Particularly since they're trying to sell you a
type of protection that is already available to you free of charge.
This type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

Oh, and be especially wary of people who advise you to do nothing
more than disable the messenger service. Disabling the messenger
service is a "head in the sand" approach to computer security.
The real problem is _not_ the messenger service pop-ups; they're
actually providing a useful service by acting as a security alert. The
true problem is the unsecured computer, and you've been
advised to merely turn off the warnings. How is this helpful?
Equivalent Scenario 1: Somewhere in a house, a small fire starts,
and sets off the smoke alarm. You, not immediately seeing any
fire/smoke, complain about the noise of the smoke detector, and are
advised to remove the smoke detector's battery and go back to sleep.
Equivalent Scenario 2: You over-exert your shoulder at work or
play, causing bursitis. After weeks of annoying and sometimes
excruciating pain whenever you try to reach over your head, you go to
a doctor and say, while demonstrating the motion, "Doc, it hurts when
I do this." The doctor, being as helpful as some of your respondents,
replies, "Well, don't do that."
I'm beginning to think that the people deliberately posting such
bad advice are hacker-wannabes who have no true interest in helping
you secure your system, but would rather give you a false sense of
security while ensuring that your computer is still open to
exploitation.

Shooting the messenger will not solve the problem because messenger is *not*
the problem - only a symptom.
The problem is that you do not have a properly configured firewall
protecting your system from unwanted access from spammers and potential
viruses/worms.
The only solution that will solve this is to install and properly configure
a firewall. XP has a simple firewall built-in but you may want to install
and configure a third-party solution as Zone Alarm, Black Ice Defender or,
if you are prepared to pay, my personal choice Norton Internet Security -
includes Firewall, Anti-Virus, email scanning, parental controls etc.
Have a look at these pages and see if the problem described seems familiar.
The info here should help you deal with this problem simply and
quickly although you may want to install a third-party firewall rather than
use the XP built-in version, the choice is yours. But get a firewall up and
running as soon as possible.

Or, in more detail, here

Be aware that simply disabling the messenger service (which is all 'shoot
the messenger' does) will *not* fix the problem - it will only stop the
messages appearing. Your system will remain
at risk until you properly enable a firewall.
Hope that helps

The OP asked for the time and you are telling them how
to build a watch. Installing fudware is not the answer to
running a secure system. This is a matter of education.
The OP wanted to know how to stop the popups and I
told them. The windows messenger service is needed in
a corporate envirement, it is not needed by a home user
who can interact accross the room.
Have a nice day.

The OP asked for a solution to a symptom that clearly points to the absence
of a properly configured firewall.
Despite your statement to the effect that you are 'educating' the OP, you
are in fact continuing to perpetuate the lack of knowledge of users by not
making the link between the symptom and the problem.
'Shooting the messenger', by whichever method you care to suggest, will
*not* prevent the actual problem - which is a non-secure system.
Simply enabling the XP built-in firewall, which is the information in the
links I provided and one of the *choices* I suggested, will provide a level
of security that obviously was not present.
Given the increasing risk of transmission of viruses and worms there is no
excuse for anyone to continue to suggest any solution to this frequently
asked and answered question other than to properly configure a firewall.
