View Full Version : Dual boot set up for XP and Win98

Hi,

Is this possible? In the old days I used to read about
systems that had 2 or more OS's installed for various
reasons. We have some old games and things that run on
Win98 and are curious if a new Machine running Win XP
could have a partition set up to boot Win 98.

TIA

Paul

Yes, but you'd need to add a second hard disk, or use a 3rd party
partitioning program to create a second partition on your existing drive.
Additionally, you'd need for the XP partition to be running FAT32 as the
operating system. Otherwise, you'll need a 3rd party boot manager.

See my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.
For Windows 2000: Install Windows 2000 after XP is installed.

It is very possible. See the following link.

Doug, why do you need third-party software? I thought XP allows you to set
up different partitions on the same drive when you install it. He just needs
to keep the whole drive Fat 32. Is that not right?

It only allows you to set up new partitions if you have unallocated space.
Otherwise you have to delete an existing partition, and all its data to make
room for XP's setup to do its thing.

You can put both on one disk but you have to prepare well. The first
partition on the drive must be FAT32 and less than 2GB in size. This is
the system partition. You need to install Win98 before XP. Win98 can be
installed on the system partition or a new partition. Any partition
installed
with an operating system is called a boot partition and you can have up
to four boot partition. After installing Win98 install XP on a new
partition.
The type of partition can be your choice, Fat32 or NTFS. XP updates the
system partition files which all operating systems use to get to their boot
partitions, where their operating system is located. If you install other
operating systems you must add them in the order they where released
because each one is only backward compatible with earlier operating
system.
