Yvonne,

I wrote an email to a Transcend tech support engineer today, describing the
problem.
If I find out anything at all, I will report back to this newgroup.
Depending on what the answer will be, I may have to ask for a refund,
because they have advertised quite clearly that this reader is Windows XP-
ready. This claim is also stated in their installation manual.

I promised to get back with my findings. Here they are:

So originally this card reader wasn't recognized by Windows XP, but worked
fine on Win2K machine.
I have been emailing back and forth with Transcend tech support, but they
could not find the cause of the problem. In the process 2 files which were
under suspicion of being corrupted were replaced. That didn't help matters.
Then the tech support suggested I try out this card on other people's
machines running Win XP Home and Pro.
I did that by asking people at Circuit City to conduct this experiment.
To my amazement the card reader was recognized by both Win XP Home and Pro
versions.
But it still didn't work on my Windows XP Home computer.
Today, almost a week after the experiment at Circuit City, it dawned on me:
those guys didn't use the supplied 12" cable, instead they used the 2" built
in cable!
So I tried that and bingo! the Windows went "dingeling" and the reader was
recognized (it works in all 6 of my USB2 ports: 4 in the back of computer,
and to up front).
Of course if you have only rear ports it will be a pain in the neck crawling
in the back of your computer trying to plug in the 2" built in cable.
