When I logon to XP on my primary machine the Welcome Screen shows a message indicating there is '1 unread message' even though there are, in fact, no unread messages waiting. How can I correct this?

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its repair mail count feature or
use it to turn the mail count off completely.

Or edit the registry and delete the mail accounts you don't want:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\UnreadMail
