had this problem with a friend.

You probably have trend chip away virus protection on you
bois settings. This has overwritten the MBR on your HD
and hence under XP's dos you cannot detect it. There is a
reference about this onthe M$ website as thats where i
found my answer. Firstly disable the bois antivirus as it
will change the MBR back after XP changes it again. One
of the 2k and XP startup disks have this program on it to
change the MBR back.

Thanks for your advice, I did a repair installation and that fixed the mbr.
