Since yesterday, my Windows Explorer seems to go into
some kind of high activity loop, using up 99% CPU. No
other process can run, even mouse movement is a crawl.

Task manager shows "explorer.exe" at 99% CPU. when i kill
it, the desktop is gone, but my computer seems active.

Rebooting didnt help.

Somebody knows the reason this might happen and a fix for
it ?

Thanks.

After ending the explorer.exe, have you tried restarting it with File>
New Task? Does it calm down or start running away again?

May want to take a look at this article as well:
