View Full Version : Game controllers panel + joystick games crash (run dll as an app)

Whenever I try to load a game controller's properties, or open any
application (games, profile managers) that use a joystick, the application
crashes. This occurs whether it is a gameport or USB device. The control
panel crashes with "Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

This started happening earlier today, seemingly randomly. I've tried
using system restore, disabling USB and trying gameport the gameport alone
(and visa-versa), resetting my BIOS to default settings, moving my
soundcard/gameport to a different PCI slot, disabling my serial and parallel
ports, running chkdsk /r from the recovery console, removing all extraneous
hardware from my system, reinstalling the devices' certified drivers...
Nothing is working. The game/app doesn't even need to have input from the
device to crash; it simply had to "look for" the joystick. Unreal Tournament
runs just fine until I click "use joystick", then it crashes instantly. The
only exception to this is loading up the game controllers panel, which
detects the pads just fine, but crashes with the Run a DLL error as soon as
I click "properties" on either pad.

FYI, the gameport device is a Microsoft Sidewinder, and the USB device
is a Belkin N50 Speedpad. They both functioned perfectly as of yesterday,
and they function perfectly on our other WinXP PCs; one of which has almost
the exact same hardware and software setup as mine. I could try reinstalling
Windows, but when I Googled this problem to find fixes, a few people said
that they tried reinstalling, and it didn't fix it.

Any help would be much appreciated.
