I had the problem you described and I found that disabling
S.M.A.R.T. on hard drive in the bios was the only way i
was able to install xp pro

Disabling SMART is a very foolish thing to do. If he's having problems
because of SMART warnings, then he should get a new hard drive right away.
SMART monitors your hard drive for physical read/write errors, if errors
increase, SMART will give you a warning saying that your hard drive is about
to physically fail and to back-up and replace it right away.

It's light telling someone to take out the "Low Oil" light bulb on their car
because it keeps lighting up and it's annoying them.

Do not wait until a convenient time to replace the drive, it could fail at
any time. At the very least back-up your data to another source, if you
cannot get a new drive right away.
