the hourglass next to the cursor always blinks even at startup.the cursor works fine when i click on something but the hourglass keeps on blinking.thanks for any help you can give.
Or, an anti virus or other scanning application could be set
to be very aggressive and is working constantly in the
background. I'd suspect AV first; try turning it off and
see what happens. MSCONFIG the first thing to try though.

You're probably loading up too many applications/programs at startup.
Do the following: Start/Run/type MSCONFIG and press Enter
Click the startup tab and disable/uncheck everything except your
anti-virus program, if Norton, it will start with NAV.
Disabling does NOT delete, only stops programs from loading and
using up your valuable system resources.
Now click Apply and Close. Reboot.
After boot, tick the window that states that you've changed your startup.
Voila! Happy putering.
