I have an external hard drive connected to my desktop via
firewire. It showed up on "Explore" and "My Computer"
as "Drive (H)" under the "Hard Drive" category (along
with hard drive (C)). After the electrical blackout two
weeks ago, "Hard drive (H)" disappeared. Instead, (H)
now appears as an additional CD-ROM drive. Device
Manager lists my external hard drive, but says "This
device cannot be started (Code 10)." What is "Code 10,"
and how can I get my external hard drive reconfigured
into my computer?

My computer was OFF at the time of the blackout, though
the power to the external hard drive was ON.

Have I burned out this external hard drive? How would I
be able to tell?

I appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

It's a good bet the blackout messed up your external drive. Try hooking it
up to a different computer.
