I am having the exact same problem with my new a290n. It
shows the DVD Rom drive as a "memory stick". HP has not
been of any help at all. I have tried everything but
FDISK and using my own XP PRO software to reinstall the
system.
All you can do is borrow a zip drive like I did and copy
the files you need.
