View Full Version : Modem whistling - Part 2

An update for those who were kind enough to reply to my request of 2 to 3
weeks ago --

When time allowed, I did some more searching in the minimal information
supplied with my m/c. One document supplied was the manual for the mobo.
This offered two gems:
1) A piece of software, Asusprobe, on the mobo CD - still in its original
wrapper. This monitors the cpu and mobo temperatures, fan speeds etc.
2) There is an output for an overtemperature warning on the mobo.

None of this is mentioned in the 'User Manual'.

I installed Asusprobe and immediately found that the cpu temperature was
sitting nice and steadily at the maximum!!!!!!!
I opened up the m/c and found leads connected to the overtumperature pins.
Tracing them through led to a sounder carefully hidden between two layers of
the front panel.

To cut a longish story short, by the usual coincidence, my cpu immediately
fried itself!!!

The cpu and mobo have now been replaced under guarantee.
Asusprobe reports that the cpu is now running at 55C against a max of 85C.
This for an Athlon 1.4gig. Reasonable????
No more whistles.
I am now a lot wiser!

Only remaining funny (I hope!) -
Asusprobe has occasionally popped up to report that the 12V supply has
momentarily dropped to 8.5 or so. The m/c does not seem to be affected in
any way. Is this likely to be a real drop or could it be a mis-read on the
part of Asusprobe?
Comments would be appreciated.
