ups belkin bulldog software doesn't work after update

this was working fine...detected power problems reliably
and shutdown as necessary...was working on "com 3" which
my internal modem was also using...was shutting down the
bulldog software to use the modem...and to top it
off...the serial cable wasn't even connected!!to the
ups/computer...

NOW ... after a few "updates" the modem works fine but
the bulldog software won't work at all despite now having
hooked up the serial cable as instructed...when i try to
view the properties on the bulldog software and maybe
change the com port i get: "monitor.exe" performed an
illegal operation...

any help would be appreciated...
