View Full Version : Upgrading to Win XP

I have purchased Win XP to upgrade my pc from Win 98. I
also want to add a new hard drive as the old hard drive is
not worth using anymore. If I take out the old hard drive,
install the new drive, do I have to install Win 98 first,
then upgrade with Win XP? Or, can I use the Win 98 cd when
asked for licensed Win ID?
Thanks

Hi Gayle -
You can use the Windows XP Upgrade CD to perform a clean install as long as
your Windows 98 CD is not an OEM Restore CD provided by a computer
manufacturer (in other words, not a restore image, but a full Windows 98
product CD, either Upgrade or Full version).
You'll be prompted late in the installation process to insert your Windows
98 CD to provide proof that you are eligible for the Upgrade version of XP.
Good luck with your upgrade!

Hi Jef,
Thank you for the info...I vaguely remember doing this
when I upgraded to Win98, but it seems so long ago!
Thanks again,
Gayle
