I'm guessing it has to do with installing the drivers.
Have you tried going to their website, installing the
driver and running the setup file. You should see your
controller in the device manager without a conflict
(exclamation mark or question mark).

There also needs to be a device listed as being a 'gameport' device (the
actual name varies). You can also try adding a "Microsoft gameport" if one
doesn't load with your sound card driver. That works sometimes, depending on
how the gameport is built.
