Most icons on my desktop show their generic version but one refuses to do
this and shows the default Internet Explorer icon (it used to show
properly). I tried fixing it with TweakUI - no go. Why is this?

What's the filetype (example, .LNK, .URL etc)?

Sorry Ramesh, I'm a little dumb here... it's a link to
http://www.proxify.com usually shows as a big red P on a black background.

They are .URL files and the "P" icon is a favicon. The favicons are lost =
when the temporary internet cache is erased. There is a third-party =
utility called FavOrg which can preserve the site specific Favicons. (no =
longer a freeware)
