Has anyone had any experience in replacing a hard drive
in a Sony PCV RX550. Should I get someone with experience
or can I pop out the old one and pop in the new and then
use the system recovery CD's to reinstall? I realize this
may cause eruptions of laughter. But I had to ask.

You should contact Sony support and ask if your Sony recovery CD
will work with a different brand of hard drive. Some recovery CDs
will only recognize a specific make and model of hard drive.

The Sony CD's will work just fine with a new hard drive, I've done many of them.
