No wav sounds

..wav sounds do not play when there is an alert, e.g. mail
notification. Also when I startup and shutdown Windows the
sounds are also gone. This occurred suddenly after a year
of use.

The sounds are still there, they just dont play when they
should. All other sounds and music play OK.
When I go to: Control Panel >Sounds and Audio >Sounds, I
see the wav sounds for the various alerts and can play
them when I highlight and hit the play triangle but they
are absent when using the PC otherwise[win XP Home, Dell
8200]

Help would be appreciated?

Don' t know without more data but, try control panel---administrative
tools--services and check if windows audio is running or started.
