windows xp profesional upgrade

i have just bought windows xp professional upgrade and i
have tryed to get it to upgrade my pc but it will not get
any further than download windows upgrade and it just
kills my hard drive carnt format the drive or do any thing
this is the third hard drive now i am using it is not a
copy disc and my pc is compatable for the disc it just
wont upgrade someone please help thanks jay
