re:icons gone

[rod ferrier]

Computer boots up and starts as normal (windows xp) but
when logging on, the screensaver appears but no icons are
present.Right or left clicking has no effect and on
Ctrl,Alt Del - taskmaster opens but can do nothing to get
the opening screen back.

What happens if you boot in safe mode?
