"Show in Groups" doesn't recognize dates

Using XP Pro

I have hundreds of photos in My Photos and I've set the folder to display
thumbnails, Arrange by Date Photo Taken, Show in Groups.

The problem is that the "grouping" doesn't seem to recognize dates. More
specifically, it appears that the date is recognized only as a string of
characters. So a photo taken on 8/18/1999 will be followed immediately by
8/11/2003 which is then followed by 8/25/1995 and then 9/1/1988. You get the
picture.

Is there any way to correct this annoying fault?

Are you using "Arrange Icons by Date"? This will arrange files by the date
the were (created, modified or accessed) on the hard drive.

Or are you using View> Choose Details > "Date Picture Taken"? This is extra
info that is stored in a special portion of an image file. The camera needs
to be capable of writing the data to the file header in a form that XP can
read. There are many variations of the extra data appended to image files.
While XP can recognize many of the variations, it is not capable of reading
all of them. If it's not picking up the info added by your camera, try using
the software that shipped with the camera to sort the images.

When reading your post again, I noticed that you have already mentioned
using the "Date Photo Taken" item. So sorry!

You can leave the photos in groups but switch to Details view and click
the header of the Date Photo Taken column. That action will sort the
pictures by that criteria. I would expect it to sort all the way down to
the year instead of using just month and day.

If it stops with month/day, you may have run into a shortcoming of
Explorer's reading of that criteria. I can only suggest a workaround of
creating subfolders that will group the images by year.
