View Full Version : Wireless Network Security

I have a T500 and Inspiron 8600 both running XP Home. I have a True Mobile
2300 wired between the PC and the cable modem. The laptop has an Intel Pro
wireless 2100 mini PCI card to access the router. With help from this
newsgroup, I have been able to set up a network that shares internet access,
files, and a printer between the two machines. My interest now is
"security". Zone Alarm is installed on both machines. Is my assumption
correct that the vulnerabilities I need to protect against are an intruder
getting a free ride to the internet via my router and second, and intruder
having access to any of my files? Do I need both encryption and MAC access
control to do this? Are there other vulnerabilities I need to address?

I think I have enabled access control but not sure. I checked the
appropriate box in my.router. However, the "add" and "edit" buttons did not
respond to my attempts to enter a physical address. Perhaps the router
retrieved this info automatically?? How can I determine if access control
is enabled and functioning properly?

As far as encryption, I have tried to enable WPA with TKIP (whatever they
mean). Once I do this (in my.router) the 8600 attempts to gain access to
the router by asking for a password. I enter the 8 character (ASCII)
password I selected when I enabled encryption. At that point, even though
the network icon in the tray indicates connection, I am unable to access the
internet or the PC. I previously installed the win XP upgrade for wireless
(and WPA) (KB826942) and installed the latest driver for the wireless card
from the Dell site (R73206.exe). Also my router mode is gateway vice access
point. Is this appropriate?

I am very new to this wireless networking and any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks, Don
