View Full Version : Messenger 4.7 and MSN Messenger 6.2

Nevertime

OK then, I have recently built a new PC and used XP Home (with SP1) as my
OS. This seems to come with messenger 4.7 with no apparant way to get rid
of it. Not that I actually need to get rid of it as such.

My problem is this;

I have upgraded/installed MSN Messenger 6.2 and now get lots of weird
messages and failures to login to Messgener 6.2 as it says I am already
logged in on another computer.

I have tried using the suggestions to totally disable messenger 4.7 by using
the remove in control panel, and by unchecking the run in background and
other check boxes in the same tab within messenger 4.7 yet still it will not
go away.

I suspect it is something to do with the way messenger 4.7 is integrated
into OE6 ? as it seems to happen when OE6 is already running and I connect
to the internet. Form what I read it is something to do with the contacts
panel which I use to see if contacts are online.

It's not that I want rid of messenger, but I only need to run 1 of them, and
I want it to be the current version. I have tried uninstalling 6.2 and then
putting it back again but this does not fix the problem. I have also tried
using 4.7 for a while in the hope that it would offer to upgrade itself, but
again, no upgrade was forthcoming.

I used to run Win98 with messenger 6.0 and had no problems with OE6 so I can
only assume it is an XP related problem.

Any help appreciated.

Greetings,

When you start Outlook Express, Windows Messenger is started in the background, which may be
the cause of why you're seeing this. To stop this behavior, close Outlook Express, then
download and runt he following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

You'll probably want to reboot if you're testing this out after importing this registry key.

Uninstall msn 4.7!
It can be done through a bat file.
Look here how to do :
http://forums.pimprig.com/archive/topic/9534.html ---> Potato Joe post..
Maybe after removing it, if still dont work uninstall even 6.2, restart pc
and reinstall it!
good luck!

Will this also stop OE from telling me if my contacts are online or not ?

If it does that would be a shame as I like that functionality. Is there
anyway to get a version of messenger that will behave like 6.x but integrate
like 4.7 is ?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Yes, this will stop Outlook Express from displaying the status of your contacts.

Unfortunately no, the behavior (in terms of integrating with Outlook Express) is not
available in MSN Messenger.

Ran the little programme, and I'm still getting the errors.

Claims that I'm already logged in on another PC (I don't have another one)
and fails to log when it automatically tries to login. Then when I force the
login manually it works but claims it's logged me out on another computer
after it's done it ?

Go figure ?
