View Full Version : File Transfer

My father in law just got a new system that runs Win XP.
His old system (Win 95 on another hard drive)has files and
programs that he wants on his new system. Since most of
the disks are now lost, is it possible to transfer the
files to the new system? The only big problem I see is
that the registry entries will be skewed. Do you have any
suggestions?

Software programs cannot be copied and transferred.....they must be
installed using the original installation media. Only data files can
be copied and transferred.

Well, that was what I was afraid of. So, if he has one
operating system with W95 and one with XP he is out of
luck in terms of keeping as much of his old system as he
would like? I suppose that buying a second copy of XP (as
an upgrade) would do the trick. Then it could be installed
on the original hard drive, the second hard drive could be
erased and then the first hard drive information could be
copied to the second. This sounds very involved but you
haven't met my father in law.

One cannot upgrade Windows 95 to Windows XP.
Only a Windows 98/ME installation can be upgraded.
