XP closes down internet connection.

On a new computer used Tiscali CD to establish my
Internect connection. Followed the instructions on the
CD and connection was made OK.
After 2 or 3 minutes an error message appeared saying the
system would be shut down and to save any work.
As this was the first connection to the Internet on a new
computer (Dell inspiron 5150)19th August I cannot see how
the Worm virus could be causing the shutdown.

Any help please.. ?

Assuming that Tiscali is an ISP that provided a custom
software package, you need to ask their tech support what is
the problem.
If you did not turn a firewall ON when you connect, you can
be infected within seconds, so you do need to run a virus
scan with an up-to-date a/v program. Be sure to run a
firewall too.

That first, brief connection is all it takes, if you've to
firewall or virus protection in place.
