Hi, Rosie.
Sorry, no email. The rule in newsgroups (even when MS calls them
"communities") is that you post your question here, you come back here for
the answers. Email benefits only the two people involved; newsgroup posts
can benefit thousands of people with the same or similar problems. If I
give you lousy advice in email, you're stuck with it. If I post lousy
advice here, someone else can correct it.
When we see a bare-bones message like yours, we assume you are adding a
second IDE drive to a typical IDE-only computer, but we're only guessing.
Are we right? Or is this one of those new Serial ATA drives? Or is it
hooked to a SCSI or RAID controller? Is it a humongous 250 GB drive that
might need you to update your computer BIOS to handle drives larger than 137
GB? Which "specific service" is WinXP complaining about? More details will
help us give you good advice - and keep us from sending you down some blind
alleys.
Have you found Disk Management? This is a new utility in Win2K and WinXP
that does all the things we used to do with FDISK and Format.exe, and with
Device Manager. Perhaps you need to Initialize your new drive here. At the
Run prompt, type: diskmgmt.msc
