I just had to do a hard shut down of my brand new Dell because the system
stopped responding to everything! I was doing nothing that I do not
ordinarily do every day so I have no clue what it choked on.

However, I am at a loss as to how to check the hard drive after starting the
thing up again!! With Windows 98 I had System File Checker and Scandisk. On
this Windows XP Pro (?) there are NO SUCH TOOLS AVAILABLE that I can see!!!
How does Microsoft expect me to check my system?

You know, the help and support centre wasn't included because the
programmers were bored. If you actually bothered to use it you might find
the answers to your questions.

Right-click on the disk icon in Explorer, Properties, Tools, and Check
Now or Defrag.

Or open a DOS shell and run "chkdsk /?" to see the options available for
the program, or run "defrag /?" to see that program's options.

By learning the NEW operating system you have chosen. You can run the
"Tour Windows XP" and roam through the Start -> Help utility. A
"dummies" book can help and be light enough to not bore you to sleep,
and there are plenty of other educational resources available, the Web
being an excellent place to search and learn.

You do not upgrade from DOS/Windows9x/ME to Windows NT4/2000/XP. You
migrate. "Upgrading" from DOS/Win9x/ME is not an accurate description
just because there some similarity in the desktop GUIs.

Hi Dave,

By default when WinXP encounters a system failure, it reboots without
warning. The setting that controls this can be changed:

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System
Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart.

You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs, gather
information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows
security events.

To view the event log: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or
Start/Run/eventvwr.

To review Shutdown Event Tracker data, Open Event Viewer. Click System Log,
scroll to the Event column, and find entries with the number 1075.

Go to Start/Run/Msinfo32/Hardware Resources, Components/Problem Devices and
Software Environment/Windows Error Reporting.

hardware and software/Hardware/Update and Troubleshooters.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, however, please understand that I
have almost 20 years experience dealing with Microsoft and it's products. In
that 20 years I have discovered that whenever I went looking to Microsoft
for an answer it either was not addressed or it was buried under volumes and
volumes and volumes of fine print! I am in a profession that currently
leaves me precious little time to "browse" endless pages of text! Imagine
that every time you bought a new car you had to learn to drive all over
again! Imagine that the steering wheel was not there in the new car but you
had to look for how you were suppose to steer, then the brakes were not
where you expected them to be...

Browsing has nothing to do with laziness. In your 20 years of computer
(calculator?) experience have you ever heard of SEARCH.

I type system file checker into help search and guess what - there IT IS!
Took all of 15 seconds. No browsing involved.

Learn about the Windows XP help. It isn't what you are accustomed to with
other programs and earlier operating systems!

I appreciate what you are saying, and maybe in this instance you would have
been right, however, what you do not know is that I very much understand
what "search" is but in my entire experience in using "search", 7 or 8 out
of 10 tries yields "no match found" -or- it yields 50,000 matches, all
having nothing to do with what I typed in! Therefore I trust this "feature"
very little.
