I am trying to boot XP Home Edition in safe mode. I am supposed to hit F8, but no matter how many times I hit it and no matter how many times I try it, it doesn't seem to work. A couple of times I did get a little menu but there were only 4 choices (whic
h I don't remember now) but none of them was "safe mode". What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

Start/run msconfig

Go to the boot.ini tab, enable the /safeboot option. Click apply/ok and
reboot. You will go straight to Safe mode. You will need to reverse the
steps to restart normally.

Hi,

Just curious, but some systems are just that way. Which are you running?
Am also curious about the menu you can't remember. :o) Better question:
What is your need to get into Safe Mode? Either way, good luck with it all.

That all said, somewhat of a repeat from Rick toward the end:

Hold down the Shift key during a fresh boot.

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok,
reboot.

The place to hit it (repeatedly) is as the BIOS info goes to black -
well before the Windows splash screen comes up.

It can be tricky - alternative, Start - Run - MSConfig

On the BOOT.INI page check /SAFEBOOT and close out to reboot to Safe
Mode. You will need to run it again there to uncheck when you want to
return to normal boot. Exit - do not necessarily bother to reboot
immediately, but next time you do there will be a message about 'System
Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box and exit
