I'm just concerned with the limit of activations, and the
factors of how they counted. Is it registration info,
mac address, ip address...

I recently bought WinXP Pro and installed it, no
complaints. I did however, fry my mother board later on
and corrupted my hard drive, so I had to replace those.
Now, in doing so, I had to register and activate XP all
over again, now I'm curious. I used the same
registration info bothe times, but I'm a little confused
on that. If I had to start over like that again, would I
have to go out a buy WinXP again? Because I've already
activated it 2 times?

Hello
There is no limit on the number of time you can activate XP.
Registration is not a requirement each time in order to activate.

"Activation is different from product registration. If they wish, customers
may *voluntarily* register their product by providing their name and contact
information . . . . Re-installation and re-activation on the same PC can be
done an *unlimited* number of times." -

If you are using a retail version of XP you can activate as many times as
you need to - on the same computer.

Actually that's for OEM, according to MS's interpretation of their OEM EULA.

XP Retail can be activated on different computers as long as it is installed
on only one computer at a time, according to MS's interpretation of their
Retail EULA.

If you are gonna spread MS FUD-based, legally-unsubstantiated rules, at
least get them right, Crusty. ;-)

Greetings --

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated
that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via
the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to
make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:
