Hoping this is not a hardware problem.

Every time I shut down the machine I get this error:

"The instruction at "0x77f69a73" referenced memory at "0x00000014".
The memory could not be referenced. Click OK to terminate the
program.

It also happened during an image program I was using today. First
time that has happened.

Could I have a faulty memory stick?

Usually that error is caused by a bug in software, but
you might run a diagnostic to check out your memory
(which is a good thing to do anyway every so often).
Download memtest86 from http://www.memtest86.com
and run it for a few passes. You should get zero errors.
