Every time I go to the update site (windows update), and do a "scan for
updates", I get a list of updates to install. If I pick anything other than
critical updates, I get a whole new windows update page in the right pane,
which lets me scan for updates, and opens a whole new windows update page in
it's right pane.... That's as far as I can get.
All other web browsing works normally.

Dave;
Disable your Discussion Bar in Internet Explorer:
On the "View" menu,point to "Explorer Bar".
Click "Discuss" to remove the check mark and disable this option.

Thanks! They should say something about that on the page, or tell MSIE to
turn it off for that page. Apparently it defaults to "on".

Your welcome Dave.
It is not on by default, at least not on most systems.
This problem is frequent enough that aparently something turns it on
though.
