Unmountable_boot_volume error while installing XP Pro

Hi,
I installed xp over win 98. I received
unmountable_boot_volume.

I cant startup win XP even in safe mode it says
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME it suggests to disable BIOS
caching or shadowing (how do i do this) and there is a
stop error that reads STOP 0X000000ED
(Ox8ob69410,oxc0000185m,x00000000,0x00000000.

How do I get past this and into the system?
