View Full Version : Missing Document, Owner Preferences

Folks: I have two questions, but the first is by far the
most urgent! I saved a document several times to
Microsoft Word last night. Everything was fine. It pulled
up, I edited it and resaved. When my husband was using
the computer, it crashed and he rebooted. Now the
document is GONE! I have looked everywhere, used the
search feature, etc., can't find it! Could the computer
have simply flushed a saved doc? Any suggestions, please!

Second not-so-urgent question, but still aggravating,
nonetheless. Every time we reboot, I have to reload all
my owner preferences. It's a pain. Is there a way to load
them and SAVE them so if the power goes out or the
computer locks I won't have to do all that junk again?

Many thanks for helping me out!

Open Word. Under File should be a list of your most recent documents.
What happens if you click on the name of the file that is missing?

Suggestions for locating the file:
1) Use Folder Options> View. Mark off "show hidden files and folders."
Remove the check next to "hide system files." Then search for the file
by name or search for all *.DOC files.

2) Run CheckDisk. If the file structure was damaged during the
crash/sudden shutdown, that could explain the "missing documents."
Fixing the file structure may bring back the document.

3) Check your Word settings. It may have been set to "autosave" a copy
of the document. If you're lucky you'll find "backup of <filename>.doc"
somewhere on the drive.

Your not so urgent question about a misbehaving user account may be part
of why your document has gone missing. It's possible there is some
corruption in your user profile. When Windows detects corruption in a
user account it gives you a temporary account to use while sorting out
the damaged account.

Try creating a new account for yourself and test run it for stability,
saving of preferences etc.
