This is from left field, but... What happens when you type a colon followed
by the right-side parenthesis enclosure (Shift+0) ? Don't exactly know what
you have as source of Smiley but do remember I had something which created
the actual Smiley when above was done.

It sounds like you have the MyView toolbar installed with Smiley Central.
If you are trying to send messages in plain text it won't work you have to
be using HTML message sending to be able to use Smiley Central.
I think I'm right, as I used to have it but uninstalled because I never
send or recieve in anything other than plain text.
Hope this helps

Greetings --

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:
