Windows XP changing file attributes to Read Only!

Please respond,

I recently upgraded to Windows XP which is loaded with
new and exciting features.
I'm using a Dell 80GB dual.
My problems:
.. Windows XP has changed many of my file's
attributes to, Read Only! And I'm unable to change the
attributes.
.. Windows XP renders many of my previously used CD-
RWs as incompatible! The data on those CD-RWs was entered
using Windows Me, and prior to that Windows 98.
.. Windows XP reports some previous folders as,
Empty Folders. And when I insert those same folders in
another computer that has not upgraded to Windows XP,
they open normally.

I am totally bewildered! There must be something I'm
doing wrong.

This is normal for Windows XP. You can change it if you work it right. You can read DOS by placing hitting START in the main menu, place your cusor (or the mouse character) up to 'run'. This opens up a box for your input. No matter what's in there, hit
the backspace to erase it and then type CMD and hit Enter and you will open a window with a command driver, probably c, with some sort of path following the drive. You will have a blinking cursor at the end. Type \cd and hit Enter. You will get rid of
the path or paths and be left with the drive. What you must do from here is place the path where your 'Read Only' files are. You can now hit attrib -r and hit Enter. Remember, r is for Read Only and -r take Read Only away. Also remember that ATTRIB is
the DOS word and using that you can change the attributes of any files by first adding that path to the drive. Good luck! -- Bob Dyson
